Brands lead the engineered hardwood flooring industry by earning prestigious distinction for indoor air quality

Mohawk Corporate LogoDallas, January 29, 2009 – Mohawk, Columbia Flooring and Century Flooring have earned FloorScore certification, making the brands the first engineered hardwood flooring products in the marketplace to receive this coveted distinction for indoor air quality emissions.  FloorScore tests in accordance with CA01350 developed by the California Department of Health Services and is recognized as one of the most stringent indoor air quality programs in the United States.

“Being the first in our industry to secure FloorScore certification is proof that our ongoing Mohawk GreenWorks’ deliberate focus to provide products that are both stylish and environmentally sound puts us at the top of our industry,” said Dewevai Buchanan, vice president of hardwood flooring for Unilin Flooring NC LLC, a Mohawk Industries company.  Engineered hardwood for all three brands is manufactured by Mohawk Industries.

“FloorScore certification will give our consumers the peace of mind that when using engineered hardwood from Mohawk, Columbia Flooring and Century Flooring, there is no need to be concerned about exposure to harmful VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) typically associated with newly installed UF (urea formaldehyde) engineered hardwood flooring products,” Buchanan added.  “FloorScore certification allows our retailers and distributors to objectively tell their customers that the flooring they are selling not only exceeds the most stringent formaldehyde emission standards currently in the world for composite wood products, but has also passed tests for 78 VOCs – not just formaldehyde.”

FloorScore, developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute in conjunction with Scientific Certification Systems, tests and certifies hard surface flooring and flooring adhesive products for compliance with rigorous indoor air quality emissions requirements.  Individual VOCs are evaluated using health-based specifications.  Flooring and adhesives that earn FloorScore certification earn a legitimately enhanced market position, distinguished by the FloorScore certification label. FloorScore certification also signifies for retailers, distributors and consumers that the Mohawk, Columbia Flooring and Century Flooring engineered hardwood meet criteria required by a variety of other well-respected organizations.

The U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) accepts FloorScore-certified products as compliant with its LEED Green Building Rating Systems for residential and commercial “low emitting” materials.  FloorScore certified products also meet the criteria for the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), a measureable standard set for educational facilities.  Also, regarding healthcare facilities, products bearing the FloorScore label may honorably claim they meet criteria established for the Green Guide for Health Care.

“Our use of the patented *PureBond® formaldehyde-free engineered flooring technology has been key in securing both FloorScore certification and our other recent achievements of both CARB Phase 1 and 2 certifications,” said Buchanan.  PureBond ® is a new innovation replacing urea formaldehyde traditionally used in hardwood plywood construction.  (*PureBond® is a registered trademark of Columbia Forest Products, Inc., in the U. S. and other countries.  Used under license.)

Recently, Mohawk, Columbia Flooring and Century Flooring all achieved Phase 2 certification for their engineered hardwood almost one year before the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) January 1, 2010-mandated deadline for full compliance.  This is further evidence that these three brands are leading the engineered hardwood industry by offering their customers flooring that meets strict emissions standards that many other brands do not meet.

Allustra & Sculptique collections introduced, feature today’s hottest looks; Quadra collection adds new trendy designs

Quick-Step LogoDallas, TX – Quick-Step, the style and technology leader in modern flooring, is introducing two new product collections at Surfaces 2009 – the high-gloss exotics Allustra collection and the Sculptique collection of softly hand-scraped, rustic decors.  These two new collections provide the consumer extraordinary style at an affordable price.  The company is also expanding its Quadra stone and tile-look collection to include a new modern cement look.

“Even though they fall on widely varying points within the design spectrum, our Allustra and Sculptique collections, as well as our Quadra additions, all hit on today’s most sought-after design looks,” said Roger Farabee, senior vice president of marketing, Quick-Step.  “Allustra highlights some of the world’s most exotic woods with a glossy finish to achieve a lustrous elegance that delivers sophistication and high-style, making an exquisite statement down to the finest detail.  Sculptique’s hand-scraped, time-worn looks add the traditional warmth that many homeowners are seeking.  Quadra’s new stained cements offer consumers a sleek, modern design element.”

Each of these collections features Quick-Step’s patented Uniclic easy-installation locking system and is backed by the brand’s limited lifetime warranty.

These new products will be featured prominently during Surfaces 2009 in booth 3419.  Quick-Step representatives will be on-hand to provide visitors with more information about the company’s new product additions, as well as many of its other popular products.

New Product Introductions:

Allustra – High-Gloss Exotics

When high-style is what consumers desire, Allustra delivers the sophistication they are looking for.  This collection is the definition of lustrous elegance, achieved by highlighting exotic wood looks with a smooth, glossy surface.  Also, with Allustra, consumers are able bring the beautiful, rich designs of exotic woods into their homes, without cutting down one endangered tree.  The collection’s 6 1/8″ wide single-planks feature a fine micro-beveled v-groove on all four sides and are available in six different species looks (Zebrano, Afrormosia, Port Wine Rosewood, Scarlet Mahogany, Chocolate Cafe Rosewood and Midnight Mahogany).  All Allustra designs feature Quick-Step’s patented Uniclic easy-installation locking system.

Sculptique – Lightly Hand-Scraped Rustics

The charm of Quick-Step’s Sculptique collection can be found in the warm look of lightly hand-scraped surfaces that lend a beautifully time-worn appearance.  The collection’s 6 1/8″ wide planks are available in varying species represented in the five decors (Amber Cherry, Earthen Maple, Black Cherry, Chocolate Cafe Rosewood and Russet Hickory) and feature scalloped edges on all four sides as well as Quick-Step’s patented Uniclic easy-installation locking system.

Quadra – Stained Cements & Soft Slates (Line Extension)
The unique Quadra collection, which accurately replicates natural slate and ceramic tile, has been expanded to now include both the stained cement look which is currently very popular in the marketplace and a separate soft slate visual.  Five-color printing captures the nuances of these materials’ inherent design details and provides the warm undertones found in the four new decors:  Painted Desert, Barista Brown, Desert Natural and Vanilla Bean.  The four new designs are available in 15 9/16″ squares with micro-beveled foil edges on all four sides and feature Quick-Step’s patented Uniclic easy-installation locking system.

Brands lead the engineered hardwood industry by achieving dual distinction

Mohawk Corporate LogoDallas, January 23, 2009 – Mohawk, Columbia Flooring and Century Flooring have earned both Phase 1 and the more-stringent Phase 2 certifications from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for their engineered hardwood flooring products.  The brands appear to be the first in the industry to achieve both levels of certification from the government agency.

“By earning Phase 2 certification already, these brands have positioned themselves as industry leaders, becoming  Phase 2 compliant almost one year before the agency’s January 1, 2010-mandated deadline for full compliance,” said Dewevai Buchanan, vice president of hardwood flooring for Unilin Flooring NC LLC, a Mohawk Industries company.  Engineered hardwood for all three brands is manufactured by Mohawk Industries.

“Distributors and retailers carrying Mohawk, Columbia Flooring and Century Flooring engineered hardwood products will have full confidence they are offering their customers flooring that meets strict formaldehyde emissions standards that many other brands do not meet, especially imported products,” Buchanan added.  (All three brands’ products manufactured after January 1, 2009 are fully compliant, however, CARB regulations allow for an 18-month sell-through provision period to deplete any non-compliant finished goods inventory produced prior to January 1, 2009.)

The key factor empowering these three brands to lead in this environmentally responsible issue is Mohawk Industries’ use of the patented *PureBond ® formaldehyde-free engineered flooring technology.  PureBond ® is a new innovation replacing urea formaldehyde traditionally used in hardwood plywood construction. (* PureBond® is a registered trademark of Columbia Forest Products, Inc., in the U. S. and other countries.  Used under license.)

“Although California is currently the only state to formally adopt such stringent formaldehyde emissions standards for composite wood products, several other states and the Environmental Protection Agency are considering similar measures as well,” said Buchanan. “Because Mohawk, Columbia Flooring and Century Flooring have achieved both Phase 1 and Phase 2 compliance, these brands are better prepared for any new regulations that may take effect nationwide.”

The California Air Resource Board (CARB), a division of the California EPA, is responsible for improving air quality in California by establishing limits for air contaminants, such as formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products.

The $33 million CTE Center offers career-focused and technical “cross collaborative” education for the Frisco, Texas school district’s 11th and 12th-grade students

shwlogo-h-stnd-gg-cmykFRISCO, Texas, January 19, 2008 – Frisco Independent School District’s new $33 million Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center, which opened in September 2008, has received overwhelming student response. Located at 9889 Wade Boulevard in Frisco, Texas, the 125,618-square-foot CTE Center is a facility where college-bound and career-bound 11th and 12th grade students engage in a cross-collaborative experience that merges real-world professional environments with educational programs.

Dallas-based SHW Group, one of the world’s largest educational architecture and design firms, served as the project’s architect, and Cadence McShane’s Dallas office served as the construction manager. The contemporary two-story structure – which features a masonry exterior with composite metal and zinc accent panels and interior finishes that include exposed structural systems of steel and wood – was built to accommodate 970 students from any of the four high schools located in Frisco ISD. Comprehensive prerequisite classes and an extensive application are required to attend the Center.

The overall goal for the CTE Center was to consolidate resources across multiple campuses within a single building. Thus, the architect designed it to allow students – both college and career bound – to explore their interests and focus on possible job options. As a result, the tools, environment and curriculum the students are exposed to closely resemble what they will experience in the real world as young adults.

For example, the center offers a full-service restaurant, credit union and bank, a court room for mock trials, TV and radio studios, computer and animation labs, an architecture lab, marketing and media centers, medical and veterinary science labs, a warehouse, a copy center and a mail room. A 4,000-square-foot greenhouse was also constructed to support the horticulture curriculum. The CTE Center also houses technology laboratories, administrative areas, a testing center, an employee training area, and a variety of classrooms, including one that is sponsored by global IT innovator CISCO.

“We worked with both the school district and the students to develop a design that combines a traditional career and technology center with a prep center that offers advanced coursework for students,” said Mark Gerner, managing principle at SHW Group. “Because of its unique location -situated between a community college and a high school site – the CTE Center serves as a physical and symbolic bridge that links secondary and higher education.”

SHW designed the center to offer unique “cross-collaborative” opportunities. For example, students from the marketing program team up with students from the TV and radio programs to write, shoot and edit television ads promoting sales and other activities. These ads, as well as other content created by CTE Center students, are displayed on a two-story flat screen media wall located in the center’s centralized atrium. With the ability to divide into 15 screens, this wall inspires student interest in the various programs and facilitates communication among students, teachers, administrators and the community.

“The various activities and amenities offered at the CTE Center teach our students both skill sets and collaboration – qualities that are necessary to succeed in high-demand occupations in the 21st century’s competitive global economy,” said Wes Cunningham, Ed.D., director of Career and Technical Education at Frisco ISD.

The $200 million, 470,000-SF facility is the first hospital in the world to achieve such status

TBG LogoAUSTIN, Texas, January 8, 2009 – Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas has been awarded LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the first hospital in the world to achieve such status.   The 470,000-square-foot hospital opened in June 2007 on 32 acres that was once part of the former Mueller Municipal Airport, which has become one of the largest redevelopment efforts in the City of Austin’s history.

Sustainable elements such as abundant natural light, renewable building materials and an on-site power plant were all incorporated in the hospital’s site plan and another key component was to provide a playful healing environment for children. A three-acre, healing garden is one of the highlights of the hospital. Articulated by passive and active spaces, it includes a multimedia movie plaza, labyrinth, human sundial, butterfly garden, floating stone fountain and reflecting pond.

Within the hospital’s central courtyard is a three-story water way, which cascades down a granite wall into a serpentine stream, then flows over a rock waterfall into a reflecting pool. Native and adaptive plants were implemented throughout these courtyards, which not only conserve water but help provide clean, oxygenated air for air-handling units on each of the hospital’s four floors.

“We designed various courtyard environments to reflect the biodiversity of Central Texas by incorporating six ecoregions, each corresponding to a distinct area of the hospital’s 46-county service region,” said Brian Ott, principal at TBG Partners, the project’s landscape architect. “This helps connect patients and family members with the familiar environments they grew up around. Since the installments, Dell Children’s has received widespread acclaim for combining cutting-edge medical technology with art and green building design to create a cohesive healing environment.”

Inside the hospital, windows of varying shapes, sizes and color line walls, providing daylight to 80 percent of the facility and to patients and staff located within 32 feet of an exterior wall. Outside the hospital, a 4.3-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant – built and owned by Austin Energy – produces 100 percent of the hospital’s electricity, heating and cooling. Other cooling features that contribute to the hospital’s energy efficiency include reflective roofing and surface pavements, and an under-floor air distribution system that requires less power to operate than a traditional ceiling system.

Sustainable and indigenous building materials – such as white Texas limestone, concrete with high ash content, recycled glass and certified wood – were used throughout the hospital’s exterior façade, flooring and walls. In addition, 47,000 tons of recycled materials from the former airport’s runway were used for construction of the hospital.

Members of the project team include Seton Network Facilities as the developer, White Construction as the general contractor, Karlsberger as the architect, TBG Partners as the landscape architect, and Bury + Partners, CCRD and Datum Engineering as the engineers.

Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas was named the “Overall Winner” in the Austin Business Journal’s annual Best Real Estate Awards contest. The hospital opened on June 30, 2007, as the newest member of the Seton Family of Hospitals. This $200 million, “high tech, high touch” facility spans nearly one-half million square feet, three times as big as the previous Children’s Hospital of Austin. That additional space supports increased capacity in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department, a comprehensive Pediatric Trauma program, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center and a host of other capabilities.
