Nine-week program provided construction management training to 41 minority and women business owners; Was the first time the Turner School has been held in San Antonio

turnerSAN ANTONIO, April 28, 2009 – Turner Construction Company’s management training program, the Turner School of Construction Management, graduated 41 students this year, all of whom are San Antonio-area minority and women contractors. This was the first time Turner has hosted its Turner School of Construction Management in San Antonio. The graduation took place at The University of Texas at San Antonio’s downtown campus on April 14, and guest speakers included Congressman Ciro Rodriguez and Richard Perez, president and CEO of The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

Since 1969, the Turner School of Construction Management has provided women- and minority-owned business enterprises (M/WBEs) and other small-business owners with formal training to develop the skills necessary to be competitive in the marketplace and potentially work with Turner — or Turner’s competitors. The school offers training in business plan development, financial planning, estimating, construction law, bonding and insurance.

Turner has held these training programs in more than 50 cities, graduating more than 21,000 entrepreneurs, and awarding 45,000 contracts, totaling $16 billion, to M/WBEs. In 2007 alone, 25 such training programs were held, graduating more than 1,000 people. In 2007, Turner awarded 4,000 contracts, worth more than $1.3 billion, to M/WBEs. Nearly $29 million worth of those contracts came out of Turner’s Texas division, which consists of Turner’s Dallas, Houston and San Antonio offices.

Turner is the leading general builder in the United States, ranking first or second in the major segments of the building construction field. During 2008, Turner completed $10.4 billion of construction. Turner offers clients a nationwide network of offices. Founded in 1902, the firm is one of the world’s leading international construction service providers. For more information, visit Turner’s website at http://www.turnerconstruction.com.

The educational architecture firm received a 2009 Honor Award in the 34th annual Masonry Honor Awards Program, hosted by the Masonry Institute of Michigan and the American Institute of Architects’ Michigan Chapter

DETROIT, April 7, 200shwlogo-h-stnd-gg-cmyk9 - SHW Group, one of the nation’s top education architectural design and engineering firms, has received the 2009 Honor Award in the 34th annual Masonry Honor Awards Program, hosted by the Masonry Institute of Michigan (MIM) and the American Institute of Architects’ Michigan Chapter (AIA Michigan), for its design of the University Center at Lansing Community College (LCC), located in Lansing, Michigan. To encourage and recognize excellence in masonry design, the annual Masonry Honor Awards Program honors works of distinction and brings public attention to outstanding buildings and projects designed by members of AIA Michigan.

The project involved renovating an existing 15,000-square-foot historic Carnegie library (built in 1898 and endowed to the school) and gracefully connecting it to a 23,000-square-foot new addition, creating the new University Center, a facility designed to expand access to advanced degrees through a partnership between LCC and a select group of four-year institutions. Located on LCC’s prominent urban campus just two blocks from the Michigan State Capitol and serving as the gateway to the campus, the Center has become a one-stop shop for student services and other university’s recruiting departments. At the heart of the new facility is a transfer center surrounded by office space for University partners, state-of-the-art classrooms, and student commons for collaboration and integration into LCC’s main campus.

“The Carnegie library is unregistered and consideration was given to demolition, but we chose to restore it using the U.S. Department of Interiors Rehabilitation Standards,” said Janice Suchan, principal at SHW Group. “Though it is not registered with the National Historical Record, we used the proper procedures as if it were.  On this topic, this building represents the marriage of older architecture with modern architecture, which will continue throughout the expanding campus.”

The new University Center is composed of a variety of masonry products including two types of brick, limestone, sandstone, cast stone, concrete masonry unit (CMU), and glass block. The Center is also unique in that it has seven different types of mortar colors and blends. SHW Group chose cast stone in the entry for its aesthetic qualities and affordable price point in addition to resembling the existing Carnegie library accent banding and massive limestone columns.

The existing Carnegie library had a heavy stone base, typical of classical building, so SHW reversed this traditional diagram for the new building by using glass block as its base. The glass block was chosen for its light-emitting aesthetic quality and energy efficient properties, while the random patterning in the glass block replicates Michigan’s native birch trees. White, split-faced CMU was used on the west, less prominent elevation, to provide a durable, long-lasting enclosure at an affordable cost.  The result is a distinctive structure whose exterior shell is aesthetically pleasing, durable and energy efficient. Elevating the brick form reinforces its mass to create tension between the “floating box” and the ground. The use of glass block at level one reinforces this and gives the impression that the brick mass is hovering. Finally, copper accents that resemble those used on the nearby State Capitol Building were used to give the Center a modern feel.

In addition to Berkley, Michigan-based SHW Group serving as the architect, Lansing, Michigan-based Granger Construction Company served as the general contractor.

updated-logo-march-20082DURANGO, COLO., April 6, 2009 – Texans have been enjoying mountain vacations in Durango, Colorado, for decades, but now they’ll have access to Durango’s best local beers right at home. Ska Brewing Company, the award-winning Colorado craft beer brewer, has announced plans to distribute their beloved beers throughout the Lone Star State.

“Texas is the biggest state in the lower 48. It’s like we’re distributing in a whole other country now,” said Ska Brewing President Dave Thibodeau.

Craft beer is the fastest-growing segment in the beer industry, with an astounding dollar-sales increase of 10.5% last year. Ska, with sales growth of 26% last year, is one of the brewers clearly leading that charge — and is now poised for even greater expansion. According to Thibodeau, the new partnership with Texas beer drinkers is a key element in Ska’s strategic plan. “We realized that in order to partner with more beer drinkers in places like Texas, we needed to increase capacity.”

That goal was realized late in 2008 with the opening of Ska Brewing’s World Headquarters facility in Durango, Colorado. The state-of-the-art, purpose-built brewing facility features a two-story tasting room and numerous innovations designed to reduce the building’s carbon footprint, including 100% wind power and insulation made of recycled denim. The new facility is capable of brewing 620,000 gallons of beer annually, a 150% increase in capacity. Ska recently released its newest beer and second beer to be made available in cans, The Modus Hoperandi India Pale Ale. Ska’s first canned beer, Ska Special ESB, was released to rave reviews in 2003.

Thanks to Ska’s newly increased brewing capacity, and a deal with Dallas-based Ben E. Keith Beverage Distributors, Ska’s mouth-watering, hand-crafted beers will be available at many Texas bars, restaurants and package stores beginning April 6, 2009. Asked what beer drinkers in Texas have to do to partner with Ska Brewing, Thibodeau explains, “They have to buy Ska beers and drink them. Actually, all they really have to do is buy them, but I can’t imagine not drinking them.”
