New collections feature sophisticated stone looks and unique large-format sizes, including an extra-large 18″x 36″ rectangular field tile

American Olean Logo

DALLAS, May 28, 2009 – Tile manufacturer and distributor American Olean has introduced two new product collections – Allora, a ColorBody porcelain that emulates the look of granite and limestone and features extra large sizes; and Alysse, a glazed porcelain tile that mimics the look of high-end travertine. American Olean has also expanded one of its most popular glass collections, Legacy Glass, to include more than a dozen new colors, color blends and glass/stone blends.

“Natural stone has always been a design favorite that adds classic sophistication and elegance to any space. The Alysse collection captures that natural simplicity, while the Allora collection lends itself to styles that are more contemporary. Both collections pair the beauty of those natural stone looks with the durability and easy maintenance advantages of porcelain,” said Lori Kirk-Rolley, senior marketing director for American Olean. “Plus, with the popularity of large format tile, we anticipate Allora’s distinctively extra large 18″x 36″ rectangular size will soon become one of the most stylish sizes on the market.”

New Product Information:
Allora – ColorBody Porcelain
american-olean-allora-carmello-2Allora is a ColorBody porcelain that echoes the elegant movement, coloring and texture of natural granite, as well as some characteristics of limestone. Its five warm colors (Sabbia, Carmello, Morrone, Argento and Carbone) boast a natural sophistication that creates a timeless look. Allora is available in two very large-format field tile sizes – 18″ x 18″ and a uniquely large 18″ x 36″ rectangle. Both sizes are modular, rectified and available in unpolished and lightly polished finishes. Allora’s sophisticated styling is paired with square edges for a contemporary flair.

Additionally, Allora features a 3″ x 3″ unpolished mosaic that is mounted on large 18″ x 18″ sheets which are modular with the field tile sizes. A 3″ x 18″ bullnose, a 6″ x 12″ cove base and a 1″ x 6″ cove corner complete the collection and are available in all colors.

Allora is suitable for all interior residential and commercial applications, including floors, walls, backsplashes and countertops. It is also suitable for residential exterior floors (unpolished finish only; excludes pool decks) and walls, as well as commercial exterior walls, in freezing and non-freezing climates when proper installation methods are followed.

Alysse – Glazed Porcelain Floor and Wall Tile
american-olean-alysse-blanc-1Alysse is a glazed porcelain floor and wall tile that emulates the appearance of travertine, lending a versatile, elegant look to any design project. The collection is available in four rich, earthy colors (Blanc, Auburn, Sable and Cafe), each with high shade variation and movement. Alysse is available in four field tile sizes: 6″ x 6″ wall tile, 10″ x 14″ wall tile, 13″ x 13″ floor tile and 20″ x 20″ floor tile. The versatility of the floor and wall tile combinations is complimented by a coordinating 2″ x 2″ mesh-mounted mosaic. A full trim package completes the collection.

Legacy Glass – Line Extension
The popular Legacy Glass series has been expanded to include 14 new trend-right colors (Willow, Dune, Camel, Chamois, Pewter, Orchid, Palm, Carbon, Leather, Jade, Dusk, Sage, Maple and Mink) and four 1″ x 1″ mosaic color blends (Desert blend, Earth blend, Smokey blend and Sand blend). Additionally, the introduction of six glass/stone blends (Ocean blend, Arctic blend, Tannery blend, Wheat Field blend, Jungle blend and Mountain blend) brings together translucent glass tiles and natural stone in random 5/8″ x 5/8″ mosaic patterns.

First-ever National Excellence in Construction Award for Turner’s Dallas office

Turner LogoDALLAS, May 27, 2009 -Turner Construction Company’s Dallas office has won a national Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for its construction of Comerica Bank’s new corporate headquarters in downtown Dallas.  Representatives from Turner and Comerica Bank will be honored with the award in June at ABC’s Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

Turner Construction was hired to manage the Comerica Bank project shortly after the company announced it was relocating its corporate headquarters from Detroit to Dallas. The fast-track project involved the interior renovation of nearly 200,000 square feet in the distinctive glass-and-granite 60-story Comerica Tower located at 1717 Main Street in downtown Dallas, previously known as the Bank One Building. The multi-phase renovation included a massive atrium-covered banking and stock exchange hall (open from the lobby to the 5th floor), five floor levels, and the addition of wood-paneled conference rooms, a dining hall, break rooms, restrooms, resource centers and numerous executive offices.  Additional renovation work performed by Turner consisted of remodeling the existing teller lines, replacing all existing countertops with granite, and updating the existing pneumatic-controlled HVAC system.

Prior to winning the national award, Turner won three local ABC awards for its construction of Comerica Bank’s new corporate headquarters in Dallas, its construction of Sagem Avionics, Inc.’s new United States headquarters facility, located in Grand Prairie, Texas, and for its renovation of Dallas’ legendary Mansion Restaurant at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.

The ABC Excellence in Construction Awards is the premier competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across the United States. The winning teams and projects represent the “best of the best” for safety, quality, teamwork, planning and innovation. A panel of industry experts serve as the competition’s judges each year, with this year’s panel including representatives from the National Association of Women in Construction, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the American Institute of Architects and the National Institute of Building Sciences.

The educational architecture firm has been honored with two awards for its design of the high school, which opened in 2008 and was designed to resemble a school wrapped around a community center; Slated to receive LEED certification

SHW Group LogoWASHINGTON D.C., May 14, 2009 – SHW Group, one of the nation’s top architectural design firms, has been honored with two awards for its design of Eastern View High School in Culpeper, Virginia – the 2009 Virginia Educational Facility Planners’ Facility Award and the Gold Design Award at the Virginia School Board Association’s annual Exhibition of School Architecture.  Both awards recognize outstanding educational facilities that serve the needs of students, staff and the community while enhancing teaching and learning.

shw-easternviewhs-exteriorSHW Group’s design concept called for the 259,218-square-foot learning facility to resemble a school wrapped around a community center. The classrooms, flexible learning areas, auditorium, media center and teacher suite all feature technological tools and agile spaces designed to promote collaboration, enrich learning and foster a sense of community. Internal glazing and the extensive use of glass gives the impression of openness with light spaces yet also allows for quiet or semi-private areas, helping facilitate passive supervision, showcase learning and promote security. In addition, every space in the school is infused with daylight and bright colors.

“Each grade level has its own house surrounding a resource area that uses a large skylight to bring natural light into interior spaces,” said Derk Jeffrey, managing principal of SHW Group’s Washington D.C. studio. “This flexible space can be used for student collaboration, small group instruction or large group exercises. For example, during breaks from classes, students often utilize these spaces by studying, visiting with friends or playing music.”

Eastern View’s sustainable design – slated to receive LEED certification – incorporates extensive daylighting, natural ventilation, polished concrete floors, lighting controls, Energy Star compliant roofing and geothermal wells. In addition, the school was sited to protect and incorporate existing wetlands on the 67-acre property.

Additionally, as Culpeper County’s second high school, Eastern View had the task of unifying a community while dividing student enrollment. To that end, the facility creates new civic space and elevates the overall academic rigor of the system. The success of Eastern View has led to a study of Culpeper’s first high school to raise its standards to a new level.

Blog to discuss hotel lender and owner issues in today’s travel downturn

prism-logoDALLAS, May 4, 2009 – Steve Van, CEO for Dallas-based Prism Hotels & Resorts and long-time lodging industry leader, has launched the “Hotel Default Blog” where he will discuss his views on the challenges facing hotel lenders and owners in today’s real estate downturn. Practical advice on topics such as foreclosures, hotel valuations, receiverships and maximizing net present value will be covered. The blog can be found online at http://hoteldefaultblog.wordpress.com.

“Lenders and owners have never faced tougher times. With this blog, I want to explore solutions to this crisis and create a dialog where we can collectively help find ways to survive now and thrive later,” said Van.

In his first post, “Hotel Lender’s Nightmare: I can’t make the hotel payroll and here are the keys,” Van forecasts almost all lenders and special servicers will get this dreaded call in the next 90 days.

“Because sales in many markets have fallen so dramatically, operating profit becomes negative and making payroll, the nuclear bomb problem in hotel operations, will require a capital infusion. Lenders can no longer count on borrowers to pay up. Most owners know they have no equity left. Payroll will become a lender problem and a nasty one with little warning. Get ready!” he warns

Van founded Prism Hotels & Resorts in 1983 and has positioned the company as the industry leader for managing distressed hotels for lenders and special servicers. Since 2002, Prism has managed more than 145 hotels for lenders and has served as receiver 64 times. Currently, Prism manages more than 7,000 hotel rooms under every major brand in 18 states and the Caribbean. In addition, Van has been honored as Hilton Doubletree Developer of the Year and serves on the Doubletree Owner’s Advisory Council.

About Prism Hotels & Resorts

The indoor waterpark resort now has a total of 686,000-SF on 45-acres, including 606 guest suites, a five-story atrium, a 27,000-SF conference center, a 72,000-SF indoor water park, and surface parking for 1,000-cars;
Expansion makes it the company’s largest resort

Turner LogoDALLAS, May 1, 2009 – Turner Construction Company’s Dallas office has completed construction of a $35 million expansion project at Great Wolf Lodge, a northwoods-themed indoor waterpark resort in Grapevine, Texas, located between Dallas and Fort Worth. The addition of the new facility comes about one year after the much-anticipated opening of Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, also built by Turner Construction, which has since attracted a loyal guest following with its extensive recreational offerings, including indoor and outdoor waterparks, and a full-service spa.

The expansion added 202 guest suites and a 27,000-square-foot conference center to the resort, making it the largest Great Wolf Lodge in the United States, with 606 guest suites. The new conference center, also a northwoods theme, was specifically designed with the needs of the Dallas/Fort Worth region’s business and social community in mind. The center features a separate entry, convenient parking near the entrance and a private registration counter.

The eight-story indoor waterpark resort now has a total of 686,000 square feet on 45-acres, including a five-story atrium, a 98,000-square-foot indoor water park, surface parking for 1,000-cars, and meeting space for groups up to 750 people, including a 27,000-square-foot conference center, a 7,500-square-foot Grand Ballroom, six breakout and meeting rooms, two board rooms, 4,000+ square feet of pre-function space, plus six outdoor event areas.

The entire project – both phase I and phase II (the expansion) – took Turner only 28 months to build, with a total of 1,262,084 man-hours spent without one lost time incident. Phase I was a design/assist, fast-track project that managed six major design bulletins and maintained a high level of quality and budget, and was completed early in time for the 2007 Holiday season.  It cost $93 million in construction volume and was completed in only 16 months. Phase II cost $35 million in construction volume and was completed in less than 12 months, all while the existing resort was open and fully-operational 24-hours a day.

“The new conference center, combined with our existing meeting space, makes Great Wolf Lodge an ideal venue for hosting group gatherings, whether it’s an executive retreat for 10 or an upscale reception for 750,” said Jack Bateman, general manager of Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. “At Great Wolf Lodge, we are committed to delivering creativity, excellence and innovation throughout the event planning process. In fact, we aim to enhance every group gathering with a foundation of focus, food and fun.”

The resort, located at 100 Great Wolf Drive in Grapevine (across from the Gaylord Texan Resort), has 605 family suites that sleep six to eight people, and a 98,000-square-foot indoor entertainment area. The highlight of the entertainment area is the resort’s signature year-round indoor waterpark highlighted by a 12-level tree house water fort, which provides an interactive water experience for the entire family that features more than 60 water effects, including spray guns, fountains, valves and hoses, has cargo netting and suspension bridges, and is capped by an oversized bucket that dumps nearly 1,000 gallons of water every few minutes. The indoor waterpark also features 5 high-speed body slides and inner tube waterslides that wind in and out of the building into a splash-down pool, a lazy river and seven pools, including an indoor/outdoor whirlpool.

Each of the resort’s Texas-sized family suites includes a wet bar, microwave oven, refrigerator and dining and sitting area, and complimentary wireless high-speed Internet access.  Room rates include use of the waterpark by four to six guests, depending on the type of room.

The resort also houses a variety of themed restaurants, including Camp Critter Bar & Grille TM, which features a two-story realistic tree with a canopy of leaves and canvas-topped booths with hanging lanterns, giving guests the impression that they are dining in a northwoods forest camp. Various quick-service outlets, a craft and activity room, a technology center, an arcade, a fitness room, an adult spa, a kid spa, retail stores and an 84,000-square-foot outdoor waterpark were also constructed.
