SHW Group developed campus master plan and designed the new academic building

SHW Group LogoGREENVILLE, Texas, June 29, 2009 – The focal point of Paris Junior College’s new campus in Greenville, Texas – a new $13 million, 42,000-square-foot multipurpose academic building – is complete. It is the first facility in the college’s multi-phase campus plan, sited on a 172-acre tract recently retired from the agricultural business and adjacent to several community amenities. Dallas-based SHW Group, one of the world’s largest educational architecture and design firms, developed the campus’ master plan and designed the building, while Dallas-based Charter Builders was responsible its construction.

The new two-story facility serves up to 2,500 students and contains flexible, technology-enabled classrooms, a science lab, a computer lab, a library, administrative offices, and a large meeting room that can also be used as a classroom.  It is located on land just west of Greenville High School at 6500 Monty Stratton Blvd. in Greenville, Texas.

The siting of the campus’ master plan considered identity and sense of place for the first building and subsequent buildings, providing a visual gateway to Greenville from the neighboring freeway.  The main goal was to provide a long-range, sustainable plan for a campus of up to 7,000 students while ensuring the short-term goal of developing a multipurpose educational building to meet current needs. The master plan helped the college locate this first building, designed to be converted to a classroom building once support functions are located in new facilities. Additional planning and design goals include:

  • Restoration of the site to a more natural state, including integration of an existing flood plain and reintroduction of native plant species.
  • Incorporation of indoor and outdoor learning environments to enhance the landscape and provide a more dynamic beginning to the campus.
  • Planning of the flexible, technology-enabled classroom building on a classroom-sized module to allow easy, inexpensive conversion to a classroom building in later phases of the plan.
  • Collaboration with the City of Greenville and other public entities to provide for commercial growth, a gateway to the city, and future community projects.
    .

“We will offer several different academic and technical classes at the new student-focused campus,” said Paris Junior College president Dr. Pamela Anglin. “Our new campus gives us – and the community – greater flexibility to do more in the future.” For more information, please visit www.shwgroup.com.

Architectural design work by San Antonio-based Overland Partners Architects, in conjunction with Dallas-based CamargoCopeland Architects, recognized with prestigious AIA National Housing Award and AIA/HUD Secretary Award Overland Logo

DALLAS, June 23, 2009 – The Bridge Homeless Assistance Center, located in downtown Dallas, has received two prestigious national awards for its design: the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) 2009 AIA National Housing Award and the AIA/Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Award. San Antonio-based Overland Partners Architects, in conjunction with Dallas-based CamargoCopeland Architects, provided architectural services for the center.

Given to only 17 projects nationwide in 2009, the AIA’s Housing Awards Program recognizes the nation’s best in housing design and promotes the importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit and a valuable national resource.

The AIA/HUD Secretary Award recognizes only a select few projects from across the country each year in three categories: community-informed design, creating community connection and excellence in affordable housing design. This year, The Bridge was the only project honored in the community-informed design category, which is given to projects in which community members, public officials, residents and architects collaborate. Overall, only four projects were honored in all categories.

Completed in May 2008 and commonly known as “The Bridge,” the multi-purpose facility is dedicated to providing safe haven and social services for more than 6,000 homeless people in Dallas, empowering both the chronic and newly homeless to come off the streets and sustain permanent housing in order to live productively.

Unlike traditional homeless assistance facilities that resemble dark warehouses and gymnasiums, The Bridge features translucent walls that allow natural light to flood into residential areas, glass art panels inscribed with poetry written by the homeless and classrooms and job training areas that are visible from the street.

“With our design, we aimed to not only create a facility that provides the most basic human need, shelter, but to also create a space that encourages and welcomes outside organizations, volunteers and donors to provide the helping hands that our homeless population needs,” said Rick Archer, FAIA, LEED-AP, founding principal of Overland Partners. “Since the doors to The Bridge opened, the center has been more successful than anyone anticipated. It has been widely accepted by homeless people, and the facility, which was designed for 400, now handles up to 1,000 people a day.”

As described by the jury for the AIA 2009 Housing Awards, “a publicly-selected artist worked with homeless, superimposing their writings over brightly colored glass – a metaphor for the spectrum of humanity. Facing downtown, The Bridge is a gift to the community, a magnet for the homeless, and a source of inspiration. It proves that shelters should not be isolated, but an integrated part of our community; they are valuable civic buildings representing the compassion of our society.”

The success of The Bridge is tangible as well.  The surrounding neighborhood is revitalizing, downtown crime has dropped since it opened, and complaints about homeless people from business owners in the central business district have decreased. Center operators also say they have reduced the need for hospitalizations, jail bookings and arrests.

In addition to The Bridge, Overland Partners is leading the design of Haven For Hope, a 37-acre one-stop homeless assistance campus located just west of downtown San Antonio. When completed in Fall 2009, the $90-million project will include approximately 440,000 square feet of space and 998 beds under roof, as well as a courtyard area with the capacity to sleep more than 500 additional individuals.

Haven for Hope will also include housing for homeless families, job training, dog kennels, medical care, detoxification and other medical and social services provided by dozens of agencies and organizations housed within the center. Haven for Hope is expected to be one of the most comprehensive homeless facilities in the country and a standard bearer for homeless assistance centers.  It has already been visited by representatives from more than three dozen cities.

ABOUT THE BRIDGE HOMELESS ASSISTANCE SHELTER

“The Bridge,” meets the growing concerns of homelessness in Dallas, Texas. A safe haven and focus for services for more than 6,000 needy, it empowers chronic and newly homeless to come off the streets and sustain permanent housing in order to live productively. The Center supports guests, provides a safe and attractive work environment, and improves the surrounding community. As a beacon of hope it provides a strong visual presence within the city and elevates the quality of public spaces. It engages the community in transforming the lives of its most disenfranchised members, proving that shelters should not be isolated, but an integrated part of our community; they are valuable civic buildings representing the compassion of our society. Collection features eleven new product series in a wide range of popular, exciting stone looks; Offers architects and landscape designers a “one-stop” option for their tile and stone needs

Daltile LogoDallas, TX, June 22, 2009 – Daltile, the largest U.S. manufacturer and distributor of ceramic tile and natural stone, has entered the siding market with the launch of its new Manufactured Stone collection. With this bold expansion into the manufactured stone category, Daltile is now a “one-stop” option, offering a complete range of tile and stone products.

“Whether they’re seeking tile, natural stone or, now, manufactured stone, designers, landscape architects and stone masons can be confident that they’ll receive the same high level of quality and service that they’ve come to expect from Daltile. Simply put, we’re a complete source for tile and stone products,” said Lori Kirk-Rolley, senior marketing director for Daltile.

In addition to its use on interior walls and backsplashes, Daltile’s Manufactured Stone collection further expands the company’s focus on exterior applications.  In 2007, Daltile officially launched its Exteriors Collection, which grouped more than sixty outdoor-appropriate natural stone and porcelain tile products to help designers and homeowners pinpoint the best tiles for their outdoor spaces.

“By adding manufactured stone siding to our already extensive array of exterior products, we aim to make the selection process as simple as possible for anyone who designs or specifies products for outdoor spaces, including building exteriors, outdoor rooms, retaining walls and other places where stone looks are desired, as well as in popular interior applications like on fireplaces and in wine rooms,” added Kirk-Rolley.

Manufactured stone is one of the fastest growing segments of the siding market, nearly doubling in size from 2002 to 2008, according to Masonry Veneer Manufacturers Association estimates.

In its first public appearance, Daltile’s River Rock Manufactured Stone series was recently featured in an episode of ABC’s hit show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” where it was used on a massive, 26-foot tall fireplace in a home built for a Florida family who, in a hurricane-damaged home, was in need of modifications for the blind and the deaf children they adopted from China.

Daltile’s Manufactured Stone is made of light-weight concrete and pumice aggregates that are cast in rubber molds to mirror the shape and look of a variety of natural stones and bricks, including antiqued brick, rough-cut limestone, river rocks, ancient stonework, weathered stone, dry stacked stone and shell stones.

“From a rugged, irregularly-shaped stone that could be pulled directly out of a Mediterranean villa to the linear, dry-stacked stones found in modern designs, our Manufactured Stone collection can be used to create a virtually endless variety of looks, both indoors and out,” added Kirk-Rolley.

To further the appearance of natural stone and to minimize repetition, the stones are cast from hundreds of molds and are hand-highlighted with brushes, sprays and powders to create high shade variation. Additionally, all collections are available for custom color match, allowing designers to request and approve specific custom shades.

Most collections are sold both by the pallet and by the box and are available in both “flats” and “corners.”  Coordinating accessories, such as hearthstones, flat wall coping, windowsills, keystones, pyramid caps and coping, quoin corners, light boxes and headers are also available.

Daltile’s Manufactured Stone carries a 75-year warranty, when installed according to manufacturer guidelines.

Project is the largest LEED-certified corporate campus in Texas

TBG LogoAUSTIN, June 19, 2009 – Technology company Advanced Micro Devices’ (AMD) new “Lone Star” campus – located at 7171 Southwest Parkway in Austin – has been awarded LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the largest LEED-certified corporate campus in Texas.  The $190 million, 870,000-square-foot campus opened in January 2008 on a 59-acre tract in south Austin. Project elements include four four-story office buildings, three recessed parking garages and the Lone Star building, which features an employee fitness center, cafeteria, gourmet coffee bar, casual meeting space, outdoor decks and a gaming center with table tennis, billiards tables and video game consoles.

Austin-based Graeber, Simmons & Cowan served as the lead architect; Texas-based TBG Partners provided programming, site planning and landscape architecture services; Austin-based Paul Koehler Brown and Austin-based Jaster-Quintanilla served as the structural engineers; Austin-based Michael E. James &Associates served as the civil engineer; and Dallas-based Austin Commercial served as the general contractor.

AMD’s new Austin campus was designed to fit the specific needs of its employees and the local environment. To create the innovative site development plan, the project team embarked on an intensive design process known as a “charrette” and created a site plan based on three key tenets: reducing site impact, protecting water quality and using innovative sustainable design. Some of the innovative design features resulting from this unique development process include:

  • Green Site Planning & Building Materials: Site plans called for structured garages instead of open lots and compact buildings with limited footprints, reducing the amount of impervious cover used to 20 percent below the amount legally entitled. Its exterior consists of native stone and metal panels, providing aesthetic continuity for the campus, while expansive glass with solar shading allows daylight to penetrate the open office areas and provides employees with visual access to the natural setting. Approximately 43 percent of the land was left undeveloped.
  • 100 Percent Texas Native Landscaping: AMD partnered with TBG Partners and Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to identify ecological areas and to salvage the native trees, shrubs and grasses within the footprint of the campus’ roads and buildings. This natural vegetation was harvested prior to the project’s groundbreaking and replanted at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center during construction of the AMD project. TBG’s design incorporated the salvaged plants to maximize preservation of the existing environment and to restore disturbed and failing ecological systems.
  • Rainwater Collection: An innovative rainwater harvesting system was designed to collect rainfall from all roof surfaces, including the structured parking garages. The rainwater is collected, filtered and stored in two underground tanks equaling two million gallons. The collected rainwater is used to irrigate the site’s native landscaping and to supplement the potable water used in the campus’ energy-efficient cooling system.
  • Sustainable Products: The design team utilized products that feature high amounts of recycled content and rapidly renewable materials to reduce energy, such as bamboo, certified wood grown in ecologically maintained forests, and concrete with a large percentage of fly ash, a waste byproduct of the coal industry. Finish materials and treatments were simplified throughout the campus in order to reduce waste, chemical pollutants and maintenance. Wherever possible, stains or clear coats were used instead of laminates, paints and coverings. In all, 75 percent of its construction waste was recycled.

Founded in Sunnyvale, Calif., in 1969, AMD came to Austin in 1979, building the company’s first U.S. chip manufacturing facility outside Silicon Valley. Today, Austin is home to AMD’s largest non-manufacturing campus and employs more than 2,500 people.  AMD has a long history of environmental stewardship and corporate responsibility and has been recognized for its efforts by some of the most prestigious institutions. In 2008, the company received the annual Climate Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for continued commitment to energy-efficient product innovation, facility design and management and industry education.

Dallas, June 17, 2009 – Dal-Tile Corp., the largest U.S. manufacturer and distributor of ceramic tile and natural stone, has become one of the first tile companies to align its grout joint guidelines for rectified tile with the newly updated standards set by the Tile Council of North America (TCNA). Effective immediately, Dal-Tile Corp. recommends 1/8-inch grout joints for all of its rectified tiles, a change from 1/16-inch.

“Tile contractors know what works best in the field and we fully support the TCNA’s new guidelines. They’ve spoken and we’ve listened – we’re proud to be a leader in the industry as one of the first tile manufacturers to join the TCNA in making this the new industry standard,” said Lori Kirk-Rolley, senior marketing director for Dal-Tile Corp.

TCNA recently issued the new grout joint guidelines for all rectified tiles, regardless of manufacturer, to address widespread problems installers were having with lippage and warpage, particularly when installing large-format rectified tiles. “We are proud of our manufacturing teams’ efforts to ensure that Dal-Tile’s products consistently meet the strict tolerances to comply with TCNA’s standards. We fully support the TCNA in encouraging the entire industry to follow suit,” added Kirk-Rolley. Houston’s Julia Ideson Library undergoing major restoration and expansion; Gensler and TBG Partners providing design services

TBG LogoHOUSTON, June 8, 2009 – Houston’s historic Julia Ideson Library, built in 1926, is in the midst of an ambitious, comprehensive $38 million restoration and expansion project and is on track to be one of the first Texas Historic Landmarks to receive LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Houston-based Gensler is the lead architect for the project, and TBG Partners’ Houston office is providing landscape architecture, planning and historic restoration services. The construction manager for both the new wing and the restoration is SpawMaxwell. Construction began in early 2009 and completion is planned for late 2010.

Located at 500 McKinney in downtown Houston, the three-story Texas Historical Landmark building was designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram, one of the 20th century’s foremost practitioners of Gothic and other revival styles. Designed in the Spanish Revival style, the library is constructed of brick and stucco with a characteristic tile roof. It was originally intended to have both a west wing and south wing complemeted by several fenced gardens.  However, due to the unprecedented economic hardships of the Great Depression, the library’s south wing and accompanying gardens were never built; portions of the library were hastily constructed while much of the original design was never implemented. “Focusing on preserving the building’s architectural integrity, we worked to develop a design that reconstitutes the library’s Spanish Revival facades and open spaces,” said Bill Odle, managing principal of TBG Partners.

TBG Houston Julia IdesonThe restoration includes a renovation to the existing building, construction of the south wing featured in the original plan, and landscape updates including an outdoor event space and a reading room. While the new exterior facades will adhere to the 1926 design intent, the new interior spaces will house state-of-the-art and environmentally-sensitive archive storage and work areas. With much of the library materials moved to high-density shelving in the newly-added south wing, the grand lobbies and reading rooms of the historic wing will be opened up for additional exhibit and event uses.

Utilizing Cram’s original plans for the south wing’s enclosed garden, TBG designed a formal garden where an emphasis on symmetry and geometry creates a signature outdoor space for the library. The garden will provide an accommodating space for special events, receptions and exhibits. TBG is also developing an inviting entry plaza that respects the intent of the original plan by incorporating native plant materials and Spanish Revival elements into the outdoor reading rooms and courtyard.

In addition to incorporating indigenous plant materials, other amenities included in the plan that will contribute to its LEED certification include an efficient air conditioning system, the use of recycled and low-emitting materials during construction, and rainwater harvesting technology that will reduce the amount of water use in the building. The library will also be brought up to current building codes, including making it handicapped accessible.
