Turner LogoTurner has more than 1,000 LEED Accreditied Professionals on staff nationally and 59 in Texas; Record volume of green buildings

DALLAS, July 30, 2009 – Turner Construction Company has achieved a significant milestone as a result of the company’s commitment to Green Building practices. Turner now counts 1,186 LEED Accredited Professionals (APs) on staff, more than 20% of its total staff.  Building Design and Construction recently recognized Turner as having more LEED APs than any other firm in the U.S. architectural, engineering and construction industry, and, with the company’s $3 billion of “green” construction volume in 2008, Turner was additionally recognized as the leading green builder in the publication’s 2009 “Giants 300″ rankings. In Texas alone, Turner employs more than 59 LEED APs, 19 Green Advantage professionals, and has provided construction services for more than 25 green projects.

“We are proud to take the top spot in this year’s Building Design + Construction green rankings,” said Sam Latona, LEED-AP, preconstruction manager for Turner-Texas. “But in addition to having green professionals and building green buildings, we are committed to incorporating green practices throughout our three Texas offices. Company-wide green initiatives include the ‘LEEDing by Example’ employee incentive, which encourages our employees to become LEED-accredited. For those that become LEED-APs, they are entered into a lottery to receive the use of a new Toyota Prius hybrid for three years.  We have also made a commitment to reduce our carbon emissions by five percent over the next five years, by reducing electricity consumption in all offices and reducing fuel consumption in company-owned and leased vehicles. Other initiatives include utilizing Turner’s online Construction Waste Recycling Reporting system, utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM), renovating offices to meet LEED standards, purchasing green office supplies, and providing green training for employees. Green practices such as these support Turner’s efforts to improve the planet and also advance sustainable building practices and environmental awareness throughout our organization, the construction industry and in our personal lives.”

Nationwide in 2004, Turner had only 42 LEED APs on staff when the company made a formal commitment to promoting green building practices. These commitments included a mandatory construction waste recycling program on all projects, conducting industry surveys and developing web-based and instructor-led green building training programs. Turner’s commitment to employee development has resulted in more than 2,500 employees receiving training in green building practices.

Turner’s LEED APs have enabled the company to complete 85 projects that have been LEED Certified by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). An additional 131 Turner projects are LEED Registered. In addition, the firm’s sustainable construction work has grown to 40% of its backlog. Turner’s green building projects are in wide array of building types, including in the education, commercial, healthcare and aviation segments.

Recent Texas-based “green” projects constructed by Turner include the headquarters for architecture firm Corgan Associates Inc. (certified LEED Silver); a bank branch for JP Morgan Chase (certified LEED Silver); Pat Lobb Toyota (certified LEED Silver, first green auto dealership in the U.S.); the Embrey Engineering Building at Southern Methodist University (certified LEED Gold; first green academic building in Texas); the Haworth Showroom in downtown Dallas (certified LEED Gold); Wal-Mart’s green prototype store in McKinney, Texas (the first green Wal-Mart in the U.S.), and more.

“Every LEED AP contributes immeasurably to his or her employer’s success by bringing the latest in green building knowledge and a holistic perspective to the table. Having a LEED AP workforce more than 1,000-strong demonstrates Turner’s leadership and commitment to cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings for their customers,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair, USGBC and Chair, GBCI.

$13 million bond allows for renovations of school district’s elementary, middle and high school campuses

SHW Group LogoNIXON, TEXAS, July 28, 2009 - SHW Group’s San Antonio studio has been selected by the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) as the architect for the renovations and additions of the district’s elementary, middle and high school campuses. The projects are part of a $13 million bond package passed in May 2009 to address aging facilities, educational program needs and enrollment growth.

The bond package consists of instructional and technological upgrades, renovations and additions, including the construction of new libraries, classrooms and a field house. The plan also calls for the switching of the elementary and middle school campuses to alleviate overcrowding and allow the schools to share programs, staff and facilities.  Nixon-Smiley CISD is a small, rural school district located in a central Texas farming community, serving 1,000 students from seven towns encompassing 376 square miles.

“This is a small school district where the average home value is $35,000-$40,000,” said Dr. Cathy Booth, superintendent of Nixon-Smiley CISD. “Most people thought it would be impossible to pass this bond during these difficult economic times, so we are very fortunate. We are looking forward to upgrading the facilities for all the citizens, parents and students of Nixon-Smiley CISD.”

SHW Group’s San Antonio studio was selected to design the school district’s facility upgrades, which include:

  • Renovating and updating the current Nixon-Smiley Middle School campus to support the future Nixon-Smiley Elementary School, including repairing leaking roofs, demolishing the structurally unsafe auditorium, replacement of its deteriorating cafeteria, upgrading the technology infrastructure, and the construction of new classrooms, a new library and a new kitchen;
  • Updating the current Nixon-Smiley Elementary campus to accommodate the future Nixon-Smiley Middle School, including upgrading the technology infrastructure and the construction of new classrooms, new restrooms and a new multi-purpose room;
  • Renovating and updating the Nixon-Smiley High School campus including repairing leaky roofs and upgrading instructional spaces to comply with mandated curriculum requirements;
  • Replacing the structurally damaged Nixon-Smiley High School library building with an up-to-date library that includes appropriate technology and square footage to implement required educational programs;
  • The construction of a new high school field house for PE classes and athletics.

In addition to providing design services, SHW Group worked with Cambridge Strategic Services, a strategic planning/consulting firm for organizations and school districts worldwide, to assist the district with their public relations bond campaign. Uptown Players LogoDALLAS, July 27, 2009 – Uptown Players, a professional theatre group located in the Uptown/Oak Lawn area of Dallas, has announced its 2010 season, which will feature the United States premiere of Closer to Heaven, regional premieres of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Regrets Only, as well as the recent Broadway hit Equus and the hysterical musical revue Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits. Uptown Players will also present its annual fundraising performance – Broadway Our Way in January. In addition, Uptown Players is pleased to announce the next phase of its Dream Theatre Capital Campaign.

2010 SEASON OVERVIEW

Uptown Players’ fundraiser, this year entitled Broadway Our Way: Legally Divas, light-heartedly pits the men against the women to determine who the true Divas of the Dallas stage really are. The evening features selections from your favorite Broadway shows both past and present, done with an Uptown Players twist! For the past seven years, this show has been a complete sell-out and is sure to be a hot ticket for January 2010. The show’s dates are January 15-24, 2010.

Uptown Players kicks off its ninth season with Equus by the Academy Award-winning author Peter Shaffer, running February 26 – March 21, 2010 at the Kalita Humphreys Theater, former home of Dallas Theater Center. Equus chronicles the disturbing journey of a young man who seems to be a normal teenager with a passion for horses, but is harbouring darker desires. A provocative story exploring difficult issues, Equus opened at London’s National Theatre in 1973 and became a worldwide sensation. The subsequent Broadway production enjoyed a record-breaking run and won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Play. The 2007 London revival was one of the biggest hits ever seen in the West End. The show transferred to New York where it became one of the most successful dramas of the 2008-2009 Broadway season.

Running April 23 – May 16, 2010 at the Kalita Humphreys Theater, Uptown Players continues its season with the hit musical comedy that was nominated for eleven 2005 Tony Awards, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Based on the popular 1988 MGM film, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men living on the French Riviera – the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money; and a small-time crook named Freddy Benson, who, more humbly, swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. After meeting on a train, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end.

From June 11 – June 27, 2010 Uptown Players will present the regional premiere of Regrets Only by Paul Rudnick at the KD Studio Theatre. Debuting in 2006 at Manhattan Theatre Club, Regrets Only is set in the glittery realm of Manhattan society where Rudnick creates a delicious recipe for hilarity. He takes one high-powered Manhattan attorney and his fashionista wife and blends them with their closest friend, a world famous gay designer. He adds a “bridezilla” daughter whose wedding plans are tanking and mixes that with a wacky maid, a cocktail-fueled mother and the President of the United States. Now shake vigorously with laughter. The New York Sun called Regrets Only a saucy, sharp-tongued comedy of uncivil disobedience.

Playing August 6 – August 29, Uptown Players will present the long-running Off-Broadway hit musical revue, Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits. Broadway’s greatest musical legends meet Broadway’s greatest satirist in this hilarious, loving and endlessly entertaining tribute to some of the theatre’s greatest stars and songwriters. Created and written by Gerard Alessandrini, the production offers amazingly funny takes on some of your favorite shows. Annie, West Side Story, Les Misérables, Rent, Fiddler on the Roof and Mamma Mia! are just a few of the shows hilariously skewered in this tongue-in-cheek tribute to some of the biggest shows to ever grace the “Great White Way”. No show is safe, and there’s nothing standard about this Broadway revue! Since its first performance in 1982, Forbidden Broadway has played thousands of shows and has become nothing short of an Off-Broadway institution. Even if you’ve never been within 1000 miles of Broadway you’ll still love Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits!

Uptown Players will close its 2010 season at the KD Studio Theatre with the USA Premiere of The Pet Shop Boys’ musical Closer to Heaven running October 1 – October 24, 2010. Set amid the hedonistic gay culture of London’s club-land, Closer to Heaven tells the story of Dave – young, sexy and fresh from Ireland and seeking the big time in London. Meanwhile, the outrageous Bob Saunders, pop manager extraordinaire, has his own plans for Dave. As fame and fortune beckon, Dave quickly learns that things aren’t always as straightforward as they seem.

The book Closer to Heaven is by Jonathan Harvey whose plays include Beautiful Thing, Guiding Star and Out in the Open. The music and lyrics are by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, better known as the Pet Shop Boys, the most successful pop duo in British chart history who have sold over 28 million albums worldwide. Their number one hits include “West End Girls” and “It’s a Sin”.

Tickets for all shows, except Broadway Our Way are $25 – $35. Performances at the KD Studio Theatre, 2600 Stemmons Freeway, I-35 at Medical District Street will be at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. Performances at the Kalita Humphreys Theater will run at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 p.m. on Sunday with an added Thursday show on March 18 (Equus) and May 13 (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). Season Ticket Flex Packages are also available and include great discounts and reserved seats. Individual and season tickets can be purchased online at www.uptownplayers.org or by phone at (214) 219-2718.

Now in its ninth season, Uptown Players has gathered a dedicated following with an annual audience base of over 12,000 patrons, including almost 1000 season subscribers. The response from the community and critics has been remarkable, including over 25 Leon Rabin Awards from the Dallas Theatre League, several hundred “The Column” Awards and 18 Theater Critics Forum Awards in its first seven seasons. Uptown Players has also been named the best theatre company by the Dallas Voice Readers in 2006 and 2007 and by the Dallas Observer in 2004 and 2005.

Uptown Players is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, presenting plays and musicals that challenge audiences artistically, build cultural bridges, and strive to create greater positive public awareness and acceptance through the performing arts. There is no other theater group with this unique mission in the Dallas area.

DREAM THEATRE CAMPAIGN

In 2008, with an eye to the future, Uptown Players realized their current facilities would not suit their needs and began to explore options for moving to a new site. The Dream Theatre campaign’s goals are to identify the best venue for the future and secure the funding needed to allow Uptown Players to grow and continue to serve our diverse community.  A special campaign board, formed in 2009, has worked with local realtors, fundraising consultants, and other area experts to scope the theater’s needs, identify the best financial options and seek properties.

Uptown Players is pleased to announce the next phase in its Dream Theatre Campaign. During the 2010 season, several productions will be performed at the historic Kalita Humphreys Theater. This move will allow Uptown Players to continue their tradition of high quality, innovative and challenging theater while maximizing the facilities offered by the Kalita Humphreys. Jeff Rane, Uptown Players’ Co-Founder stated, “In many ways, the Kalita Humphreys is an ideal venue for Uptown Players. We will remain close to our community and hopefully attract new patrons. The increased space, both on stage and in the audience, allows us to expand our offerings and welcome more theater-goers to each performance.” Craig Lynch, Uptown Players Co-Founder, adds, “The economic challenges of 2008 – 2009 presented us with harsh realities as we embarked on our search for a new venue. By utilizing the amazing space available at the Kalita Humphreys Theater, we can meet our artistic goals while continuing our Dream Theatre Campaign on a slightly longer timeline.”

Alamo Golden Ale, the first offering from local craft brewer Alamo Beer Company, is now being distributed throughout San Antonio

Ben E. Keith LogoSan Antonio, July 27, 2009 – Dallas-based Ben E. Keith Beverages, one of the largest beverage distributors in the United States, has begun distributing Alamo Beer Company’s Alamo Golden Ale throughout San Antonio. The smooth and refreshing handcrafted Alamo Golden Ale is brewed locally and is the company’s first offering in San Antonio. Brewed with a balanced blend of the finest hops and malted barley, Alamo Golden Ale is a full-bodied, refreshingly lighter style ale with a smooth, velvety finish.

Alamo Beer Company began selling its handcrafted beer in 2003 by personally delivering the local brew out of Simor’s minivan. The innovation behind Alamo Beer is a reflection of Simor’s travels from all over the world. While venturing from place to place, Simor drank the local brews and enjoyed the diverse ingredients and flavorful aromas of the world’s beers. All that knowledge and desire to have a fine handcrafted local brew has been poured into Alamo beer.

“Alamo Golden Ale is the perfect introductory beer for both inexperienced and experienced micro-brew drinkers. The taste will not overpower the first-timers, yet its full-body and flavor will appeal to the enthusiasts,” said Eugene Simor, president of Alamo Beer Company. “The demand for our product has outgrown the ability to be personally delivered. However, we are incredibly proud to be working with Ben E. Keith and to bring their exceptional service to our customers. Our little beer now has a big distributor.”

Micro-brewed beers are unique in their formulation. They’re specially brewed in small batches and handcrafted with high-quality ingredients. The care and individual attention it receives creates a fine distinction from other, perhaps more notably known production brews.

“Craft beers tend to do well in the region in which they are brewed,” said Kevin Nettleton, General Manager of Ben E. Keith Beverages Specialty Division. “Alamo is a high quality product brewed just a few miles north of San Antonio. We’re thrilled to distribute Alamo Golden Ale all over San Antonio and look forward to eventually expanding distribution across the state.”

Slated for completion in 2010, the sustainable three-story building will have a 150-200 lecture hall, student gathering areas, general purpose classrooms, teaching science laboratories and more

ARLINGTON, Texas, July 2SHW Group Logo3, 2009 - SHW Group, one of the world’s largest educational architecture and design firms, has completed the design for the new three-story, 120,000-square-foot Science and Academic Building at Tarrant County College District’s (TCCD) Southeast Campus, located in Arlington, Texas. Turner Construction Company’s Dallas office was selected as the general contractor.

Once complete in late 2010, the new building will have a new 150-200 student lecture hall, student gathering areas, general purpose classrooms, back-to-back teaching science laboratories, a common prep area that will be shared by all teaching groups, and a large, three-story atrium space that will offer flexible hard and soft seating for students to gather between classes.

Aiming for LEED Gold certification, the new Science and Academic Building is an addition to TCCD’s Southeast Campus, merging the campus’ Life and Computer Science programs and serving as a model for interdisciplinary facilities through its approach to planning, site and the environment.  It was ultimately designed to create a new identity for the campus and to serve as a destination for students who are commuters at the college.

Following TCCD’s master plan, this first step towards a multi-building institution frames a new campus axis and science/technology corridor.  The site, along an east/west axis adjacent to the original campus structure, allows for significant reduction in solar heat gain and invites large expanses of glass along the north and south facades. This glass also provides daylighting into all interior academic and student spaces. Deep sculptural fins on the east and west facades create a dramatic building expression and effective sun control. In addition, the building’s cantilevered structure provides shaded exterior study spaces and circulation, as well as reduced heat gain and glare on the ground floor glass.

“The building’s materials take its cue from the original structure — complementing the campus’ existing fabric while expressing contemporary notions, craft and purposefulness,” said Deb Ebersole, project manager at SHW Group.  ”The design invites collaboration between the various disciplines within the building through a central multi-story gathering and circulation space, as well as smaller group study areas located throughout the building and in its surrounding landscape.”

The integration of landscape creates a dynamic extension of the building with a variety of exterior study, gathering and social spaces. An assortment of Live Oak trees complement the sculptural east façade and provide a shaded plaza between the two buildings, while flowering shade trees and sitting areas along the building also invite student and faculty use and communion. This merging of landscape and architecture combined with the use of drought resistant, indigenous plantings and trees reinforce the importance of both to successful campus architecture and planning.

Daltile’s Linear Options and American Olean’s Linear Express allow customers to order custom-cut floor tiles in linear or rectangular sizes

Daltile LogoAmerican Olean LogoDALLAS, July 22, 2009 - Dal-Tile Corp., the largest U.S. manufacturer and distributor of ceramic tile and natural stone, has launched a customized cutting service that allows any Daltile or American Olean ceramic or porcelain floor tile to be custom ordered in linear and rectangular sizes, ranging from a minimum of 2″ wide to a maximum of 24″ long. With the launch, a core assortment of products from top-selling collections in a variety of popular sizes is being offered with a short lead-time. Any of the brands’ other ceramic or porcelain floor tiles can be special ordered.

The service, called Linear Options under the Daltile brand and Linear Express for American Olean, uses the company’s automated cutting equipment to create the custom sizes at the Dallas factory. Tiles can be specified with straight or beveled edges so that all four sides have the same visual appearance. In preparation for the launch of this service, Dal-Tile has made significant investments in new equipment and space at its manufacturing facilities.

“Before our linear-cutting service, anyone looking for linear shapes and rectangular sizes were either limited to a handful of collections that offered those options premade or they had to have the tiles cut down at the job site by their installer. Now, any Daltile or American Olean rectified porcelain tile or glazed floor tile can be ordered in popular linear and rectangular sizes, making the design options virtually endless,” said Lori Kirk-Rolley, senior marketing director for Daltile.  “And since the custom cuts are done at the factory, the quality of the cuts is more consistent and higher quality than doing it by hand.  Additionally, we’re helping reduce labor costs at the jobsite by removing this extra step in the installation process.”

The core assortment of products were selected from many popular porcelain tile collections and are being offered in a range sizes with a three-week lead time, including floor tiles from Daltile’s City View (2″ x 24″, 4″ x 24″, 6″ x 24″), Concrete Connection (3 ¼” x 20″), Metal Effects (3 ¼” x 20″), Fabrique (2″ x 24″, 4″ x 24″, 6″ x 24″), Monticito (6″ x 18″), Veranda (3 ¼” x 20″) and Vibe (2″ x 24″, 4″ x 24″, 6″ x 24″) collections and American Olean’s St. Germain (2″ x 24″, 4″ x 24″, 6″ x 24″), Avenue One (2″ x 24″, 4″ x 24″, 6″ x 24″), Nouveau (2″ x 24″, 4″ x 24″, 6″ x 24″) and Ultra Tech (2″ x 24″, 4″ x 24″, 6″ x 24″) collections. However, any ceramic floor tile, including these core offerings, can be custom cut to any size within the minimum width (2″) and maximum length (24″) limits, with lead times to be determined at the time of the order.

SHW Group served as the project’s architect, redesigning the interior, exterior and adding a new sustainable landscape design to an original MWSU building

WICHITA FALLS, TexaSHW Group Logos, July 16, 2009 - Midwestern State University’s (MWSU)  McCoy School of Engineering at Fowler Hall in Wichita Falls, Texas – a renovated $6.2 million, 23,000-square-foot multipurpose academic building – has been completed and is an adaptive reuse of one of MWSU’s original buildings. Designed by Dallas-based SHW Group, one of the world’s largest educational architecture and design firms, the new McCoy School of Engineering building includes a complete renovation of the interior and exterior, in addition to a new landscape design.

The interior renovation incorporated advancing the engineering facilities, including three high bay laboratories for robotics, invention and senior design. Other renovated laboratories include physics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer, machine dynamics, measurement and instrumentation, fluid power and materials science. In addition, state-of-the-art classrooms, department and faculty offices, and collaboration areas were created. Additionally, new “study pods” — which overhang into the labs — provide a fully interactive and collaborative work environment for the students and staff. The surfaces of the pods become moving walls of information as projection and writing surfaces alter the façades throughout time.

The renovation also included a translucent glass box that cuts through the exterior of the building creating a vessel of light and a bold expression of function and spirit. The lantern’s modern detailing provides a sharp contrast to the traditional expression of the original building. The box creates a glowing top-lite volume which showcases three major labs and a design studio in the center of the building causing the building’s center to be filled with light.

“The design concept for the engineering building was constructed around the idea of a ‘light box,’ so the architecture represents a beacon at night,” said Eric Miller, project designer for SHW Group. “Both the exterior and interior designs of the building are also representative of the engineering program itself – ‘a living learning lab’ – since the school’s engineering program analyzes stress materials. The terra cotta blocks, masonry unit, natural light, etc., express the raw nature of material relative to the engineering program.”

The exterior renovation responded to the provision of high bay spaces, as well as to ensure the integrity of the original Fowler Hall. For example, the new landscape plan was driven by the existing pattern of student movements throughout campus and the development of student gathering spaces as an extension of the interior learning environment. The use of indigenous plant species, custom fabricated seating and new walking surfaces were also employed to introduce a new language of landscape onto the campus, thus reinvigorating the importance of landscape fabric to the university.

“The architectural expression inside and out will highlight the work of the students in the laboratories, especially their designs and creations,” said Jeff Sharpe, principal of SHW Group’s higher ed studio. “For instance, we decided to leave the construction markings on the materials to convey the process of design through assembly. With these unique touches, the building echoes the university’s commitment to the engineering program while allowing the students’ programmatic requirements and needs to be met in an inexpensive manner.”

In addition to SHW Group as the lead architect, Jose I. Guerra Associates served as the civil, structural and MEP engineer, while Imperial Construction, Ltd. served as the project’s general contractor. For more information, please visit www.shwgroup.com or www.mwsu.edu.
